Australian Paralympic gold medallist and world champion para-cyclist Paige Greco has died at the age of 28.
Greco died on Sunday at her home in Adelaide following what AusCycling described as a “sudden medical episode”. The national governing body released a statement on behalf of her family the following morning.
In the statement, Greco’s mother, Natalie, said the family was “devastated by her loss” but “incredibly proud of the person she was and the way she represented Australia”.
“Paige meant everything to us. Her kindness, determination and warmth touched our family every single day,” she said.
Greco had cerebral palsy and came to para-cycling from running, making the switch to the bike in 2017. She went on to win multiple world championship titles and World Cup medals, and in 2022 she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.
At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, Greco won Australia’s first gold medal of the meet in the women’s C1-3 3,000m individual pursuit, setting a world record in the process. She added bronze medals in the C1-3 road race and the time trial.
Greco was unable to qualify for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, which she called one of the tougher moments of her career. She returned to the international podium in 2025, taking World Cup time trial bronze in Ostend before claiming bronze in the C3 road race at the Para-cycling Road World Championships in Belgium in August.
Tributes flowed from across Australia’s sporting community, led by AusCycling and Paralympics Australia.
AusCycling chief executive Marne Fechner said Greco “was an extraordinary athlete who achieved outstanding accomplishments at the highest levels of our sport”. She added that Greco’s positive energy and courage left a lasting impact on everyone around her.
Paralympics Australia chief executive Cameron Murray said her international success was remarkable, but it was her kindness, quiet determination and the way she lifted those around her that would be remembered most.
