Freeze You Later! Cold Snap Smashes Outback Records While Ski Resorts Shout “Snow Yeah!”

Australia’s June cold snap continues across the southeast, with outback towns like Winton and Gayndah breaking temperature records. Ski resorts are loving it, with up to 78cm of fresh snow on the slopes.

The Big Aussie Chill: Record-Breaking Cold and Peak Powder Vibes

From outback ice boxes to Alpine après-ski, Australia’s south-east is riding a cold wave colder than your mate ghosting you after a group chat blow-up.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) says temps dropped up to 10°C below average in parts last week – enough to make Queenslanders dig out those 2007 Billabong puffers.

“It’s been a dream start,” said Lani Banerjee from Vail Resorts Australia, speaking on behalf of all snow bunnies in Perisher and Falls Creek.

Snow Much Fun: Ski Resorts Living Their Best (Early) Life

It’s a rare moment when Victoria and NSW ski fields are as happy as footy fans after a State of Origin win. Over the King’s Birthday long weekend, resorts saw massive natural dumps and fired up the snow cannons in perfect conditions.

“We’ve got a solid base and blue skies on the way – it’s shaping up to be one of the best early winters we’ve ever seen,” said a Mount Buller spokesperson.

Why So Cold, Mate?

BoM climatologist Qian Zhou explained the science behind the shivers:

  • Clear skies at night let heat escape like a tradie’s coin pouch
  • Southerly winds dragged polar air up from Antarctica
  • Dry inland air meant temps dropped like a reverse crypto chart

But Wait – Isn’t It Meant to Be Getting Warmer?

Yes… and also no. While the long-range BoM forecast still tips above-average temps June–Sept, that doesn’t mean it won’t get arctic-level cold on the odd week.

“We can still get cold periods,” Zhou reminds us, adding that Australia’s average temp has increased by 1.51°C since 1910.

So, you’ll still need your puffer jacket for June, and maybe your rashie by October.

Aussie Wrap-Up: From Tropics to Tundra

In true Aussie style, we’ve managed to turn record-setting cold snaps into:

  • A ski resort PR dream
  • A Queenslander’s nightmare
  • A meteorological mood swing

So whether you’re strapping into skis or defrosting your windscreen with a spatula, remember: It’s winter, mate. Embrace the chill – or at least Instagram it.
