Menulog to Cease Operations in Australia After 20 Years

Sydney, Australia – Food delivery platform Menulog has announced it will cease operations in Australia, marking the end of two decades of service. The decision, confirmed by Amsterdam-based parent company Just Eat Takeaway.com, comes amid what the company described as “challenging circumstances” in the local market.

According to an official statement released on Wednesday, Menulog will stop accepting orders from midnight on Wednesday, November 26.

“While Menulog has a proud 20-year history, it has been navigating challenging circumstances,” the company said.
“This strategic decision reflects our focus on accelerating growth and investments in other markets, and delivering the best experience for customers, partners, and couriers.”

Impact on Employees and Partners

The closure will affect approximately 120 Australian employees. Menulog confirmed that all affected staff will be fully supported with generous redundancy packages exceeding legal requirements, along with career transition and outplacement support to assist in finding new employment opportunities.

“We’re committed to ensuring our team members are treated with respect and care during this transition,” a Menulog spokesperson said.

Industry and Worker Reactions

The announcement has sparked concern among delivery workers and industry bodies. Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) National Secretary Michael Kaine said the decision would come as a shock to the thousands of food delivery riders who have relied on Menulog for regular income.

“We will be working to ensure those workers receive pay for their work and fair exit payments over the coming weeks,” Mr Kaine said.

He also called attention to broader issues within Australia’s gig economy, highlighting ongoing challenges faced by delivery riders.

“Workers continue to languish with below-minimum wage rates, no sick leave or superannuation, and face deadly pressure to rush to make a living while avoiding deactivation,” he added.

A Legacy in Australian Food Delivery

Founded in the early 2000s, Menulog was one of Australia’s pioneering food delivery platforms, connecting local restaurants with customers long before the rise of global competitors. The brand became a familiar name in cities and suburbs across the country, helping transform how Australians order takeaway meals.

Despite this legacy, increasing competition, changing market dynamics, and the high operational costs associated with delivery logistics have made profitability difficult for many players in the sector.

Looking Ahead

While Menulog’s departure marks the end of an era, its parent company Just Eat Takeaway.com stated it remains focused on strengthening operations in other key international markets.

The company reiterated its commitment to delivering quality experiences for customers, partners, and couriers globally, while ensuring Australian employees and riders receive fair and transparent treatment during the transition period.
